Description
The M4 Sherman was the first tank to be fitted with the Royal Ordinance QF 17-pounder (76,2mm) anti-tank gun, reportedly able to shoot a round clean through a Tiger tank. The Sherman had insufficient armour to protect against 88mm rounds, so either tank could take out the other with one shot. The “first shot” victory was, arguably, the first taste of modern armoured warfare.
